The computer rendered image of ACR-1000 was created by the drafting team using Solid Edge, a Siemens software product.
The highly competitive annual contest was open to companies around the world as a way to showcase their expertise in utilizing the Siemens PLM software to its maximum capabilities. ACR-1000 uses the 3D software to create mechanical machine computer images of our flagship product. AECL’s submission was an image of the ACR-1000 reactor assembly.

The contest was open to the 150,000 world-wide users of Siemens software product known as Solid Edge. AECL competed against companies and institutions including General Motors, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and McMaster University.

Thousands of entries were submitted and judged by industry professionals on the following criteria:

  • Overall dramatic impact/aesthetics of image
  • How much the image represents maximum usage of Siemens PLM Software products
  • Complexity of image
  • Image innovation
  • Image clarity/high-quality resolution

Through the efforts of Bob Weiler, Ed Wong, Taj Assie, Andy Uckardes, Larry Vollick, Kobus Lourens, Sherry Zhou and Valon Jashari, their ACR-1000 Reactor Assembly cut-away image appears on Siemens’ 2010 calendar for the month of July. The calendar is distributed to thousands of Siemens’ customers, partners and suppliers.

“This is just another way of showcasing ACR-1000 to the world,” says Bob Weiler, former Section Head who coordinated the submission. “We have an innovative product and Solid Edge software allows us to display our reactor assembly in much detail.”

As part of their prize, the team received an HP Mini-Netbook, which will be auctioned to the drafting team involved in the project.

“All proceeds from this auction will be donated to the Haiti Earthquake Relief efforts, in AECL's name,” explains Ed Wong.
