AECL introduces Chalk River area council

AECL has launched an Environmental Stewardship Council to enhance communications with key area stakeholders and the
communities surrounding its operations near Chalk River, Ontario.
AECL’s Chalk River Laboratories (CRL) is home to scientists and engineers who perform research and product development to support and advance CANDU nuclear reactor technology. The facility is widely known for its world-class expertise and work in physics, metallurgy, chemistry, biology and engineering.
Brian McGee, Vice President of AECL’s Nuclear Laboratories Business Unit based at CRL, recently addressed the Council, noting that this forum - similar to utility-based community advisory groups - will provide regular opportunities for face-to-face meetings that promote two-way dialogue on environment-related matters and other topics.
“It is an opportunity to exchange ideas and opinions with a broad base of interested members of the public and interest groups,” Brian said.
During the meetings, Council members will be updated on AECL activities and be given an opportunity to express their opinions and offer advice to AECL management on these activities. They will also l be kept apprised of the company’s proposed actions on matters that are raised.
The Council’s first meeting was held in late October and included participation from the Pembroke District Office of Natural Resources Canada, several local municipalities, environmental groups, the Algonquins of Pikwàkanagàn and other interest groups.
A representative of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission’s Chalk River site office also observed the proceedings. The agenda included an overview of AECL and its Chalk River operations, a presentation and discussion on waste management and decommissioning activities on the CRL site, a site tour and an opportunity to discuss the long-term objectives of the Council.
“I would like to thank all of those who participated in our first Council meeting for their interest in AECL and their commitment to this process,” Brian said. “The Council will prove to be an invaluable tool in keeping the lines of communication open between AECL and our stakeholders.”
