Information regarding recent Gentilly media coverage

Chalk River, 2012 September 17 — Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) is providing the following information with respect to recent media coverage concerning the Gentilly-2 nuclear power generation station in Bécancour, Quebec.

Over the past week, a number of Quebec-based media outlets have published information that raises health-related concerns about living close to nuclear power stations in Canada and, in particular, the Gentilly station in Bécancour, Quebec.

AECL would like to direct members of the public to a statement from Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission President Michael Binder in which he responds to these safety-related allegations. In his statement, Dr. Binder corrects a number of falsehoods that have been raised about the safety of the nuclear industry in Canada and about living near nuclear stations.

As the regulator for the nuclear industry in Canada, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) is the authoritative voice with respect to the safety of Canadian nuclear power generating stations. For more information on the CNSC, please visit www.nuclearsafety.gc.ca.
