Applying nuclear science and technology to the benefit of Canada
(2013 November 19) The following information bulletin is in accordance with Atomic Energy of Canada Limited's (AECL) ongoing commitment to voluntary public disclosure of events related to the Chalk River Laboratories. AECL reports an unplanned interruption to the Canadian supply of the medical isotope molybdenum-99 and will be unable to meet its planned isotope deliveries for the week ending November 23. This interruption is due to emergent equipment repairs required to the Fuel Rod Flask.
The Fuel Rod Flask is used in the fuelling and de-fuelling of the NRU reactor and the movement of other reactor components including molybdenum-99 rods. Planning and repair activities are underway on the Fuel Rod Flask with an estimated return to service before the end of the current week.
Based on this timing, it is anticipated that AECL will resume supplying molybdenum-99 to the market over the weekend.
There are no nuclear safety issues related to this activity. At no time has the safety of our employees, the public or the environment been at risk. AECL will provide updates on repair activities and the Fuel Rod Flask’s anticipated return to service as information becomes available.
