Ces d\u00e9chets ont \u00e9t\u00e9 g\u00e9r\u00e9s avec prudence dans des zones r\u00e9serv\u00e9es, aussi appel\u00e9es zones de gestion des d\u00e9chets. Bien que la majeure partie du site de Chalk River ne soit pas perturb\u00e9e, certaines zones, y compris les zones de gestion des d\u00e9chets, ont \u00e9t\u00e9 contamin\u00e9es \u00e0 divers degr\u00e9s. Comme il reste une quantit\u00e9 importante de d\u00e9chets enfouis, des mesures correctives s\u2019imposent pour r\u00e9duire les risques pour l\u2019environnement et contrer la contamination du sol et des eaux souterraines.<\/p>\n<p>Le d\u00e9classement et la gestion des d\u00e9chets radioactifs doivent se faire de fa\u00e7on responsable pour nettoyer le site de Chalk River, prot\u00e9ger l\u2019environnement et faire place \u00e0 de nouveaux b\u00e2timents qui appuieront la mission de science et de technologie nucl\u00e9aires en cours aux Laboratoires de Chalk River.<\/p>\n<p>Un projet cl\u00e9 qui permettra de nettoyer les b\u00e2timents et les terrains contamin\u00e9s aux Laboratoires de Chalk River est la proposition des<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnl.ca\/gerance-environnementale\/installation-de-gestion-des-dechets-pres-de-la-surface-igdps\/?lang=fr\"> LNC<\/a> de construire une installation de gestion des d\u00e9chets pr\u00e8s de la surface. Cette installation permettrait d\u2019assainir les zones contamin\u00e9es, d\u2019enlever les d\u00e9chets radioactifs \u00e0 faible activit\u00e9 des aires de stockage temporaires et des zones existantes de sol contamin\u00e9 vers une installation de pointe qui contiendra les d\u00e9chets et les emp\u00eachera de contaminer l\u2019environnement suffisamment longtemps pour qu\u2019ils se d\u00e9sint\u00e8grent naturellement. Ces activit\u00e9s comprennent, par exemple, l\u2019exploitation d\u2019installations de traitement des eaux pour emp\u00eacher la contamination des eaux de surface et des eaux souterraines dans les zones o\u00f9 le sol a \u00e9t\u00e9 contamin\u00e9, ainsi que des activit\u00e9s de surveillance continues pour s\u2019assurer que la contamination ne se r\u00e9pand pas.
