Ottawa, ON (July 23, 2025) – Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) is pleased to announce that Fred Dermarkar, President and Chief Executive Officer of AECL, has been appointed as a member of the Canadian section of the Trilateral Commission’s North America Group.

The Trilateral Commission is a global membership organization that for decades has brought together senior policymakers, business leaders, and representatives of media and academe to discuss and propose solutions to some of the world’s toughest problems. Founded in 1973 by David Rockefeller, the Commission has long been an important venue to incubate ideas and form relationships across sectors and geographies. Leadership is organized across three pillars: North America, Europe, and Asia, and comprises a group of countries sharing common values and a commitment to the rule of law, open economies and societies, and democratic principles.

With over 40 years of leadership in Canada’s nuclear sector, Fred brings deep expertise and a strong commitment to international collaboration. Since 2021, he has led AECL in advancing nuclear innovation, clean energy technologies, and the responsible management of Canada’s radioactive waste and decommissioning programs.

Prior to joining AECL, Fred served as President and CEO of the CANDU® Owners Group (now Conexus), fostering global cooperation among operators of CANDU® reactors. His career also includes senior roles at Ontario Power Generation, where he contributed to the design, operation, and refurbishment of Canada’s CANDU® fleet.

Fred’s appointment to the Trilateral Commission is a testament to his leadership and advancements in the nuclear sector. AECL congratulates him on this well-deserved recognition.
