Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) and Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) are welcoming the University of Alberta as the newest member of the Academic Partnership Program at Canada’s national nuclear laboratory.
Established by AECL and CNL in 2023, the program brings together Canada’s national nuclear research capabilities and the expertise of leading academic institutions. The University of Alberta becomes the program’s eleventh member, creating new opportunities to connect researchers and students with CNL’s specialized facilities and scientific expertise.
The partnership comes as Alberta explores the potential role of nuclear energy in supporting economic growth, energy security and emissions reduction. CNL and the University of Alberta will explore research collaboration in areas supporting Canada’s Nuclear Energy Strategy, including advanced reactor technologies, medical isotope production, radioactive waste management, materials science and fusion-related research.
For AECL, the partnership is an opportunity to strengthen connections between Canada’s nuclear research capabilities and academic expertise, while supporting the development of the people and skills needed for Canada’s nuclear future.
“By bringing together researchers, expertise and specialized infrastructure, we can advance nuclear science and technology in ways that deliver real benefits for Canadians. For Alberta, this partnership creates new opportunities for researchers, and students to connect with Canada’s broader nuclear research ecosystem, collaborate on emerging areas of nuclear science and technology, and build expertise that will support the sector’s future,” said Dr. Amy Gottschling, Vice-President of Science, Technology, Commercialization & Corporate Strategy.
Students will also have opportunities to participate in experiential learning, internships and research collaborations at Canada’s national nuclear laboratory in Chalk River. Since its launch, the Academic Partnership Program has engaged more than 7,000 students across Canada through research and experiential learning opportunities, mentorship, lectures and other activities.
