The MAPLE-1 was built at the Chalk River Laboratories and partially activated in 2000 for medical isotope production. However, it was never fully commissioned and now remains in safe storage to be decommissioned.

Another reactor, the MAPLE-2, was also built but never commissioned due to future costs, risks and changing market conditions.
