SLOWPOKE reactors were designed by AECL as a low-energy and cost-efficient option to provide a source of neutrons for research. They are used today as a tool for teaching nuclear science and technology.

Located in Kincardine, Ontario, the Douglas Point reactor was once the largest steam condenser in Canada and provided valuable operating experience to Ontario Hydro and AECL in advancing reactor development. It provided electricity to Ontario’s power grid and served as a source of steam for a heavy-water extraction plant.

Located at the Whiteshell Laboratories in Manitoba, the WR-1 was the largest organically cooled, heavy water moderated nuclear reactor in the world and played an important role in building Canada’s scientific and industrial capacity. Originally built as a test reactor for a proposed CANDU power reactor, it later went on to be used for nuclear fuel research and other programs.
